Artist Statement – Carol Curran

My art journey started many years ago when I went to Elaine Larter’s studio for Folk Art lessons. I now run the Folk Art group for U3A every Thursday with a great bunch of participants.  My involvement with Maranoa Artists started when I became treasurer, a job which I still hold many years later. I began with Mavis Bunt’s watercolour workshops which were a great starting point. I then progressed to the workshops conducted by out-of-town professional tutors. I have dabbled in charcoal, pastels, oils and watercolour. I enjoy the challenge of watercolour, but my fallback is the matte flow acrylics (gouache) we use in Folk Art. You may call me a ‘hack’ and that is okay with me because I just paint what makes me happy. I do like colour as I feel it lifts the spirits – no black for me.

Artist Statement – Loretta Thomas

I love colour!  I love mixing it, splashing it and putting it down on all sorts of surfaces.  My one true love is watercolour!  The way it challenges, moves of its own free will, blends and surprises.  I have been learning its wiley ways for about 30 years. I do like to paint in other mediums as well and I enjoy acrylic, pastel and mixed media.  I battle with oils but am determined to master them.  And if I am honest I would say that my greatest challenge would be to paint beautiful landscapes in oil.  My art is UNsophisticated!  In fact I would call it “Low Brow”.  There is no pretension, no hidden meaning.  I just like to paint! I have been lucky enough to hold five solo exhibitions and have won numerous prizes in local and regional Art Competitions.  In addition, my work is held in private collections across Australia.
