John was born in Roma and has lived in the district all his life.
He took on his present holding – Culbara – north west of Roma in 1962, where ever since he has endeavoured to produce beef cattle whilst seeing off many droughts and the occasional flooding rain. He’s still doing this at the age of 75.
John very reluctantly painted his first picture at the request of the Roma on Bungil Gallery for a charity fundraising exhibition by all male non-artists, held in 2011.
Having completed that one picture – with great difficulty! – he now can’t seem to stop painting. No time for any lessons or tuition, painting scenes straight out of his memories of the bush that has been his life’s work.
He has a very understanding wife.
