Artists across Australia are busy preparing their submissions for what is fast emerging as one of Queensland’s most prestigious outdoor sculpture competitions.
The inaugural Sculptures Out Back Acquisitive Competition and Exhibition was hailed a huge success when it was launched in Roma last year and entries are now open for the 2022 event.
With just shy of $40,000 in prize money on offer, Sculptures Out Back is expected to attract some of Australia’s top sculpture artists.
“We are so excited about the interest and support we have received for the competition and outdoor exhibition,” Sculptures Out Back committee member Anne Galloway said. “Last year hundreds of people enjoyed walking through the 11 sculptures on display in Roma
and we expect the same kind of interest again after our gala opening on August 13.”
The sculptures will be displayed in an outdoor exhibition adjacent to the Bungil Creek in Roma until October 22. Ample parking makes it easy for both travelers and locals alike to stop and enjoy the art.
QR codes on each sculpture will allow visitors to learn about the artists and their vision for the pieces as they walk through the exhibition.
This year the major award, the Origin Open Acquisitive Prize will see the winning artist take home $20,000 in prize money. The winning acquisition will be part of the Maranoa Regional Council public art collection.
Local artists residing within the Maranoa region will also compete for the $10,000 Maranoa Regional Council Acquisitive Local Artist Sculpture award while up and coming artists will have an opportunity to take home the $5000 Hall and Chadwick Emerging Artist Prize.
There is also $2000 in prize money available for the very popular Roma on Bungil Gallery People’s Choice Prize – to be voted on by the public on opening night.
And in a new addition to the competition, $2000 will be awarded for the Roma Wire and Steel Acquisitive Garden Seat prize. That winning acquisition will be placed within the future Sculpture Park.
